History and Present


Northwest of Downtown sits a section of historic neighborhoods that date back to the late 1800s.Widely considered Houston’s first planned community, it was founded in 1896 as its own city with an independent jail, hospital and city hall. Founders Oscar Martin Carter and Daniel Denton Cooley, principles of the Omaha and South Texas Land Company, purchased more than 1,700 acres in 1891.

But the Heights is way more than classic historical houses, we are talking about great small business area, good connectivity, and great urban vibe.

Residents once flocked to the area to escape the big city, but today it’s home to diverse Houstonians that are drawn to its rich and character-filled architecture, mom and pop-type shops and funky restaurants.

Location, location, location

The Heights neighborhood is located northwest of downtown Houston. Not only is this area four miles away from the downtown area, but it is also northeast of Uptown. Uptown, also known as the Galleria Area, is a business district. Which means if your job is in any of these areas, you should consider moving to the Heights to get your commute shortened.

Of course, living in the urban lifestyle has its cons, and we are talking about getting used to traffic, or looking for a parking spot could be the hassle of our day.

Home is where the heart is at.

Despite the rise of sophisticated new establishments in the area, the Heights retains its vintage vibe with midcentury buildings on 19th street, quirky businesses and rows of Queen Anne and Craftsman-style homes.

Homes in Houston Heights are breathtaking, and many have historic significance. You will find Victorian era buildings, New Orleans style bungalows and traditional homes all mixed together. While there’s not much room for new development, you will find some newer properties as well.

The Craftsman building style was developed Between 1900 and 1930, it was one of the most popular architectural styles in America. The Craftsman style is often associated with a form of house called a bungalow. These houses are boxy and had low-pitched roofs with wide eaves.

Although older, Prices here are more on the higher end. Smaller homes starting can start at 400k and up to 1. millions.

Culture

The historic Heights area, one of Houston’s most interesting and charming neighborhoods, is in the midst of a retail and restaurant development boom.

The Heights is considered one of most walkable neighborhoods in Houston ! While Houstonians definitely love their cars, there are nooks and crannies of the city that are best explored by foot.

Open since the end of 2017, Heights Mercantile is a chic, urban market district located on 7th between Heights Boulevard and Yale. The area offers plenty in the way of shopping, eating, and exploring, making it a choice spot for an afternoon stroll.

There’s also a combination of new construction and renovated buildings that opened last year along the White Oak Hike and Bike Trail.
